Ok, y’all. Mark your calendars, set your DVR’s, rewind those blank tapes
‘Cuz mama’s gon be on the tee vee this Saturday.
So I was asked to do a segment on summer white wines under $15 for WCNC-NBC.
Isn’t that what we’re all wanting right now?!
I’m working with Deutsch Family Wine and Spirits and all their (so many damn) wines they distribute. Guys, they work with so many of my favorite juices… and then so many you see eeeeverywhere (hello, yellowtail).
So before you see me live on the air talking about everything this Saturday…
(August 5th 6-7 am on WCNC-NBC) 😉
…I wanted to give all you beautiful people a little peep on the inside scoop beforehand.
because I love you.
And here are the 4 chosen ones:
In order of how I’ll be tasting and sharing them, we have…
- 2015 Josh Cellars Sauvignon Blanc from the North Coast of California.
Ok. So, I’m a huge new world sauvignon blanc fan. I love me some tropical fruit in my face mouth. But this is not that. And that is sooo ok. This wine is very old world to me. It has hints of white flowers and powder, light citrus notes and a bit of white peach… acids are nice and low.
You can find it at around $14. It pairs well with seafood and pasta… chicken… any sort of summery light fair. And it’s a very easy drink.

Next up is the…
- 2016 Barone Fini Pinot Grigio from the Valdadige region of Italy
This one made me smile, y’all. It reminded me of my Nama. She was such a big fan of Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio when she was with us. And we open a bottle of it every June 16th to toast her a happy birthday! Now, I only wish I could have exposed her to this beauty. This pinot grigio is so fantastic. And its HALF THE PRICE!! They actually did a survey, and consumers preferred this Barone Fini over the Santa Margherita by a landslide.
3 out of 4 people said yes to the Barone.
It was clean and crisp, just as you want a pinot grigio to be… lots of lemon and honeydew notes… lovely tartness and acidity… super nice minerality. I wanted to drink this for dayzzz. It’s only $12. TWELVE DOLLARS. And paired beautifully with my roast chicken.

The third wine in the mix is the…
- 2016 Chateau Bonnet Bordeaux from Entre-deux-Mers
This is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and a bit of Muscadelle. And I absolutely tasted the 30% semillon that was present in this blend. There’s a lanolin aspect of semillon that always gets me… a slightly waxy element that lingers with you on the tongue.
it’s $13… It was a little powdery, fairly low in acidity… lots of pear and a bit of tropical fruit. Pairs well with most cheeses, light salads and shellfish.

The final wine on the white wine tasting list is a natural closer…
- 2015 Skyfall Chardonnay from Columbia Valley, Washington State
This gem is something that I don’t normally drink. I’m not the hugest American chardonnay fan, to be honest. I find them oft too manipulated and over-oaked and lacking in the finesse that the beautiful grape truly wants to be.
But sometimes I find one that stands out among the bunch. And it’s $14. This one has the buttered popcorn fun that a lot of people love in a chardonnay, but it was very mild… not slapping you in the face with it. It was soft and creamy… notes of buttery marcona almonds and creme anglaise.

I’m so very pleased with this lineup and can’t wait to share it with you all live this Saturday!
